Blasts from Two Pasts
By Kristel S. Villar
Fate's
been playing tricks on Cara Nicolas lately. She agrees to go on a blind date
with her best friend’s fiancĂ©’s cousin, only to discover that the guy is her
first love from high school, Lucas Lobregat. Now that would have been a
charming story, except that the date turns out to be one of the worst ever. And
they can’t even pretend it never happened, because they’re both suddenly part
of the wedding preparations.
Just
as she is starting to get to know more about the boy she used to love, Oliver
Sta. Maria, an old flame who owes her some closure, surprisingly shows up. With
two pasts resurfacing, which will Cara choose to rekindle? Or can she have the
chance to choose at all?

Review
The story follows Cara who had a traumatic break-up with her
boyfriend Oliver. Cara is also helping
out her best friend Ayen plan her wedding while trying to mend her broken
heart. Ayen sets her up with Lucas a
cousin of the groom, who happens to be Cara’s first love. Cara doesn’t believe that Lucas remembers
her from high school, but their first date is a disaster anyway. Lucas doesn’t seem to be interested and Cara
leaves confused and upset.
The story really takes off after their first disaster date
you get to see how upset that Cara is from her breakup with Oliver and that she
is leaning on her friends and workouts for support. I think in a breakup situation it is
important to have strong friends to keep you positive. Also, it is important to try and get yourself
back out there because you never know what is lurking around the corner. I love that Ayen keeps setting her up to get
her back out in the dating world!
I love the idea of rekindling with your first love, even if
you think that is might have been unrequited love. Sometimes second chances happen in life and
you need to grab them by the horns since you never know if they will happen a
third time. I love that the book flashes
back into the past so we can see what Cara thought about Lucas and their previous
interactions. Also, if you never speak
up about your love you will never know if the other person feels the same
way. Sometimes the feelings are mutual
and a love story develops!
I also like that the book touches on the topic of closure
from a previous relationship. Do you actually
need closure? Can the closure affect your current/future relationships? I think
this is an interesting topic the author brings up because sometimes you just
need to know what happens, but in the end maybe that closure doesn’t help your
future. I think sometimes not knowing
what happens sticks with you, but if you find that right person to be with you
don’t actually need to know why your past relationship didn’t work out since
you are with the right person now.
I would suggest reading this book anytime that you need a
very positive love story. It is a super
quick read, but makes you remember what first love is like. I read this at night before bed and it was a
perfect ending to the night!
