The Importance of a Book Spine to Me

I am very guilty of picking a book based by the spine. If the font looks inticing or the colors I am most likely to pick the book up from the shelf and start reading the back to see if it grabs my interest.  This method of picking a book is not the most ideal as you never know when you are going to find a book that you struggle to get through, but you also never know when you will find your favorite book that you can’t put down.

One of the books that I picked up because the book spine at the library  is The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum.  It instantly became my favorite book I could not put it down.  It was a time in my life where this book spoke to me and took my full attention. I read it twice before I could even really sit down and think the book through.  I don’t think I would have ever found it without just randomly picking it up off the library shelf.

After picking a book by the spine I will read the back cover to see if this book can keep my attention for even a short preview.  If the short synopsis of a book can keep me attention I will start reading it immediately.  If the short synopsis doesn’t keep my attention I know there is no hope of me finishing the book so why start it when there are so many books I want to read.I always finish a book even if it takes me forever so sometimes I do find a ud, but sometimes I find long lost treasures and great books that transform the way you look at life.  Also, I am big at not reading or googling a random book I have picked up from the shelf, sometimes you need to keep an open mind to read the book.  Keeping an open mind lets you experience it for yourself and not be influenced by others.  I will read reviews after I finish a book to see if there is something I missed or not considered.   I want my opinion of a book to be my own so when I recommend a read to my friends or family it is my honest opinion with no influence by others.

Another plus of finding a hidden gem is with all the resources available online you can easily search that book and find other recommendations that match the feel of the book you just feel in love with.

So if you are not sure what to read next go to your local library look at the spines of the books and pick the one that speaks to you the most.  You never know if you will find the book that is perfect for this moment in your life or your favorite book ever!!
